Erin Glace has always had a love for children,
from beginning babysitting at age 11 to YMCA
camp counselor every summer from high school
through college. She even planned her professional
career as a physical therapist (University
of Florida- GO GATORS) to be pediatrics all
the way. Plans change and Erin spent the first
5 years of her career as a pediatric physical
therapist but then had the opportunity to
work in women’s health and sparks ignited
and this became a passion as well. Erin continued
on this course (completing her advanced masters
degree at Old Dominion University) while adding
a husband and three beautiful children along
the way. As Erin’s
oldest daughter was growing, it was becoming
apparent to Erin that there was a need
for more positive and non competitive
fitness programming for young girls. Our
society was becoming extremely fast paced
and our girls were feeling pressure in
almost all aspects of their lives. But
what about just exercising for fun and
learning about the rewards of taking good
care of your body? It was obvious to Erin
that combining her love for children and
passion for women’s health could
work together to provide positive programming
for young girls. She teamed up with a
great friend, Ann Beck, and they created
Healthy Girls- a program designed to provide
positive fitness experiences, nutritional
education and good self image programs
for young girls.
Erin currently resides
in Chesapeake, VA with her very supportive
husband, two daughters and son.

from Old Dominion University in 1994. Ann
has coached scholastic dance teams and has
taught yoga as a certified instructor. Ann
has always considered athletics and staying
fit an important part of her life.
She worked as a lifeguard and enjoyed playing
basketball, volleyball, and softball on her
high school teams. She began "Healthy Girls"
with her partner in 2004 with the goal of
promoting fitness and good self-esteem in
girls.
Ann resides in Chesapeake with her loving and supportive husband and two
beautiful children.

Questions & Answers for Healthy Girls
Q: What is
Healthy Girls?
Healthy Girls is an innovative new program
designed by a physical therapist to address
the ever-changing and challenging nutrition
and fitness needs of our preteen and early
teen girls. We want to empower our girls by
teaching them fun and effective lifelong fitness
programs, healthy food choices and positive
self esteem. Healthy Girls specifically provides
fun fitness programs that include yoga, exercise
ball, aerobics, step classes, strength training
and more. We know that adult women tend to
keep in shape by doing these type of activities
and we know that our younger generation of
future women can only benefit by learning
these skills early. We are always positive
and noncompetitive.
Q: Why a "clubhouse?"
Our program strives to address many of the
needs of our girls by providing not only positive
and healthy classes but also a place where
girls can go and feel welcome and a true sense
of belonging. We are offering Fun Friday night
activities for our Healthy Tweens. We will
provide scheduled activities and speakers
for positive mentoring, encouragement as well
as just some down time watching a movie or
doing crafts with friends. The clubhouse gives
us the place and sense of community to offer
our fitness programs and our "down" time.
Q: Is this specifically for over-weight girls
or those with weight-management issues?
Not at all. So many girls can benefit from
our programming. Our classes will provide
overall conditioning for girls who have not
traditionally been as active, as well as provide
foundational stretching, strengthening for
even the competitive athlete. Basically, we
are a program that can benefit any girl interested
in improving her health and physical fitness
level. Again, we are always noncompetitive
and positive. We want to see all shapes and
sizes of girls. We emphasize, in our educational
program, that we each have different body
types and our goal is to make good choices
when it comes to how we exercise, eat and
treat our bodies. We understand that, similar
to adult women at an exercise club, each girl
(& parent) will come with different goals
in mind. We have questionnaires that parents
and girls will complete so we will be able
to keep each individual goals in mind when
working with our clients.
Q: How do
you incorporate nutritional education into
the classes?
We have monthly newsletters that will address
both nutritional and esteem issues. We will
have fun food and fitness facts posted throughout
the clubhouse. We will also address these
issues in our newsletters through educational
activities like a short skit, a game or simply
a group discussion.
Q: Are snacks
and drinks available at the clubhouse?
We will have prepackaged healthy snacks provided
a small cost and occasionally provided free
of charge as part of a programmed activity.
Q: Are there
other ancillary programs planned?
We have had quite a few other businesses interested
in doing some programming with us including
an etiquette education business, an image
enhancement educator and several other related
sports/health businesses. We will be very
excited to offer more programming that will
foster positive growth for girls. We also
offer many classes aimed at including the
total family, including our Moms and Babes
classes and Mother Daughter Yoga. Our Mother/
Daughter Yoga has been a popularly requested
class- aimed at providing Moms (or grandmas,
aunts, friends) opportunity for fitness and
time together doing something positive. Yoga
is an awesome exercise for strength and flexibility.
We have such a good time with the girls and
it is such a non pressure situation. Moms
and daughters should not be apprehensive.
It is just fun and good exercise- remember
always positive and noncompetitive. Our Moms
and Babes program is definitely something
we are so excited to offer as a new program.
We will offer moms an opportunity to exercise
(yoga, pilates type exercises) while their
2-4 year old is happy in a creative movement
class downstairs. We will even provide free
baby care for our under 2 crowd. Our new location
offers us the ability to expand our programming
in these exciting ways.
Q: What is
in your "kit"?
Our kit is an all inclusive fitness program.
We had such fun developing and producing this
program. It is an act of true passion for
educating girls about health and fitness.
We, as always, emphasize making good choices.
Our kit includes: an exercise DVD featuring
ball exercise and yoga, a 55cm exercise ball
and foot pump, a health and fitness booklet
written for girls and an exercise poster.
We are very excited to offer this program.
It is currently available at the clubhouse
or online at www.healthygirls.net.
Q: Do you
do individual programming?
Currently, we provide only classes. We want
girls to interact and know that the clubhouse
is a place to go for fun, fitness and friends!
We all know that exercising with friends is
far more motivating than by yourself. Parents
or girls with any specific concerns can always
talk to the teachers and we will address those
issues individually.
Q: How do you incorporate self-esteem building
in your program?
We address the esteem issues in the same way
as nutrition, through newsletters, skits,
short presentations and small group discussions.
Q: Do you
have any career opportunities available? Will
you be franchising?
We hope to soon be hiring some very qualified
and positive fitness instructors. Currently
our teaching staff consists of a masters level
physical therapist and a yoga certified teacher
with a Bachelors degree in psychology.
Our goal is certainly to franchise in order
to bring this type of positive and innovative
programming to other areas. Right now, we
are so happy to be working in our own backyard!
We have a planned expansion to Virginia Beach
within the next year.
